The area was then ceded to the United States in 1848 after the Mexican-American War. Broken down into geographical portions, the western portion of Alta California was established and regulated as the 31st state on September 9, 1850. The California Gold Rush that started in 1848 resulted in impressive social and demographic developments, which came from massive emigration from eastern U.S. and worldwide, leading to an economic boom.
